Overview
150-acre nature preserve that offers exceptional opportunities for birding as well as observing other wildlife. Home to 12 native species of Ohio orchids. 1.5 mile trail system. Regular educational programming throughout the open season.

Wahkeena Nature Preserve is a 150-acre natural area managed by the Fairfield County Historical Parks for the Ohio History Connection. The preserve hosts an abundance of plants and animals typical of unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. Black Hand sandstone cliffs are forested primarily with tulip trees and oak. Rhododendron, mountain laurel, ferns and orchids are among the preserve's showiest plant species.

Visiting hours from late March to November are

Wednesday through Sunday

8am - 4:30pm.

Admission is free

All groups are by reservation only. No pets or picnicking are permitted in the preserve.

Spotted Salamanders Migration
Tue Feb 28

7:30 - 11:00 pm.

Tonight is the night for the Salamander migration. We will be opening the gates at 7:30 pm for anyone interested in seeing dozens of Spotted Salamanders headed to the vernal pools.

This is an ongoing program, you may arrive and leave as you please, no reservation required.

Be warned.... It will be raining so dress appropriately for an outdoor event. Please bring a flashlight.

Parking is limited, so carpool if possible.
