Thumbelina, The Story of a Little Girl

7 pm. One morning, Mama's dearest wish is granted when a rosebud opens and Thumbelina, the tiniest, loveliest and bravest of girls, emerges. Thumbelina and Mama are very happy until a Froggy Mama kidnaps Thumbelina, intending for her to marry her boorish, burpy son. With a big dose of bravery, and a little help from a friendly Beetle, Thumbelina escapes on a lily pad across the water. Her adventure continues when a hungry Spider captures her. It takes all of her wits, and a bit of help from the audience, for Thumbelina to break free from the web. She next befriends an injured Sparrow who teaches her the value of sharing your time and to appreciate new food (gummy worms!). As the Sparrow heals under Thumbelina's care, a storm of clouds descends. Thinking quickly, Thumbelina enlists the audience's help in blowing the clouds away, and she and the now healthy Sparrow fly home to a joyful Mama. With just four actors playing twelve roles, this whirlwind production is high energy, calling upon the help of the audience to make sure Thumbelina finds her way home. The bright costumes and minimal set encourage a child's imagination. Yet with enough jokes for the adults to appreciate, this production is sure to leave the audience laughing and wishing that they too could defeat a blood sucking mosquito or fly high above the clouds on the back of a sparrow.

Tue/Wed 12-5 pm. Thu 12-8 pm. Fri 10 am - 5 pm. Sat/Sun 1-5 pm. The most unique feature of the Kennedy collection is the series of Navajo sandpainting textiles that Edwin Kennedy commissioned with the assistance of Red Rock Trading Post owners Troy and Edith Kennedy over nearly four decades. These weavings reflect sandpainting designs used in six traditional ceremonial healing practices: Beautyway, Waterway, Bead Chant, Great Star Chant, Hailway, and Coyoteway. Red Stick Ramblers

The Ramblers play a unique hybrid of Cajun, country, stringband, and swing influences - a sound marked by a daring willingness to experiment with mixing different elements. Hard driving, witty, eclectic, and honest, the music of the Red Stick Ramblers is inseparable from their way of life and the rich Louisiana culture that first inspired them. Their fifth album, My Suitcase Is Always Packed, is as much a travelogue as a sound recording, complete with audio snapshots of relentless all-night dances, laid back campfire sessions, dusty honky-tonks, and raucous family reunions.

Bruce Dalzell & Friends

9 pm. Bruce Dalzell is the patriarch of the Athens music scene. He is a craftsman, constructing delicate and thoughtful folk tunes that cut through all the pretense of the modern music industry to hit listeners at their core. Although his catalogue of tunes is not without dark or mournful underpinnings, his songs always glow out of that dark night, with the soft but steady warmth of Bruce. His personal musical achievements are enviable enough on their own, having been recently nominated for a WAMMIE award for his song “Tocoi Light,” and having graced the stage of West Virginia Public Radio’s much-celebrated “Mountain Stage” roots music radio program. His legacy is also manifest in his studio (I Love Brucie studios), his family, all musically celebrated themselves (his wife and sometimes musical partner, Gay is a member of The Local Girls, and their adult son Harlan is one half of The Princes of Hollywood), and his unflappable commitment to playing pro-bono A&R man to the scores of hopeful, novice singer-songwriters who clamber to his long-running open mics at Baker University Center’s Bunch of Grapes room Wednesday nights, and The Front Room on Friday nights. Sensing that he could offer even more, he took it upon himself to create Singer-Songwriter showcases at Donkey Coffee for emerging local talent, which eventually bore a child in the form of an ongoing CD series. No matter how bad the new arrivals to the open stages are, no matter how many times he has heard the same cover song, he always gently taps his feet, and he always earnestly claps. For this, he has garnered neither fame nor fortune, but he does have the enduring respect of hundreds of strummers who left Athens better musicians than when they arrived.

Paul Thorn

7 pm. Stuart's is excited to announce the return of Paul Thorn to our stage. Paul has come very close to selling out his last two performances, and with good reason. Kris Kristofferson calls him "...the best kept secret in the music business." the first thing you notice is the Voice, unique and distinctive, the voice of a man who has walked a long, hot span over dusty Mississippi country roads. At turns soulful, raw, melancholy, brazen, funky, circumspect, serene, brooding, and mutinous, the voice expresses the range of human emotions, from forlorn grimness to incandescent optimism. and after repeated listens, you realize that his is not merely the voice of a poet but also of a merciful prophet, a summation not unjustified. Those who follow the career of Paul Thorn believe he is both. His newest CD is A Long Way From Tupelo, a collection of songs which once again illustrates Thorn's versatility and authentic connection to the music of the Mississippi heartland: blues, country, gospel, rhythm and blues, and rock 'n' roll. Thorn excels as a musical storyteller. Maybe, given his background, he just can't help it. His songs are conduits for that gritty part of the South where beleaguered wisdom is as likely from the bottom of a bottle of Johnny Walker Red as it is from the pulpit of an old country church. And the latest Paul Thorn CD remains true to form. For more information visit www.paulthorn.com.

Sky Imagery in Selected Sandpainting Weavings

It is, by all accounts, the largest single collection of sandpainting textiles in existence.
