Your Hosts
In 1995,
Mike & Carol Hunter purchased 90 acres of land in Salt
Creek Township to build a cabin. On the property stood
the remains of an old cabin and we were instantly
intrigued by the possibility of renovating this
dilapidated structure. We soon began building our own
cabin on the property and eventually discovered that the
old cabin was quite sound. Weatherboard siding had been
placed over the original hand-hewn logs, thus protecting
them from the elements.
We also
discovered that the Smith family had built the cabin in
the late 1800s and Smith descendants were still living
in the area—in fact next door neighbors! The late Emmit
Smith, who lived down the road from us, was born in the
cabin, along with 6 siblings. We also discovered land
patent records for the Smith family dating back to the
1860s. To commemorate the Smith family, we saved layers
of wallpaper and samples of everything that was found in
the cabin during the renovation process and created a
shadow box that hangs in the living room of Big Maple
Log Cabin.
We
began restoring the cabin in the Spring of 2000, taking
the structure down to just the original 4 log walls.
Everything but those 4 walls is new to the cabin but it
still sits on the original rock foundation that was laid
in the late 1800s attesting to the strength and
integrity of the design used by Ohio’s pioneer families.
We wish to share this bountiful, natural setting with
those who enjoy it as much as we do. Big Maple Log Cabin
is family owned and operated and we take great pride in
offering you a comfortable, well maintained cabin. A jar
of homemade cookies on the kitchen counter will welcome
you to the cabin in hopes of starting off your stay at
Big Maple Log Cabin with a smile!
While we do live on the same property, your privacy is
of the utmost importance to us. There are no telephones
in the cabin, nor is there cell service in our area.
Emergency calls may be made at the main house and we
will gladly receive and forward messages to your party. |
